Guitarist John Guth has toured and/or recorded
with many well known singers including Bob Gibson, Tom Paxton, Mimi
Farina, Susanne Vega and Judy Collins. His versatility has been
displayed in extensive traveling and recording with cabaret artist
Peter Allen (It’s Time for Peter Allen)and with the jazz/New
Age group, the Paul Winter Consort with whom he wrote lyrics for
2 songs on Common Ground. He was the onstage guitarist for the entire
run of Big River on Broadway (music by Roger Miller). He is also
a singer and songwriter himself and has appeared all over the NY
area in solo concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. His electric and
acoustic guitar work can be heard on many TV and radio commercials
and recordings.
Currently John's main activities revolve around his recording studio
in Valley Cottage, NY. There, he has created many audio scores for
children's cassettes and videos for Random House, McGraw-Hill, Listening
Library, American School Publishers, and other companies. Tuesday
and The Maestro Plays were American Library Association Notable
children’s videos with John’s original music praised
highly. Three of his productions of Jack Prelutsky’s musical
renditions of his children’s poetry-Something Big Has Been
Here , The Dragons Are Singing Tonight, and Monday’s Troll
have won ALA notable awards, and the latest, A Pizza the Size of
the Sun ,was released by Random House in 1999. His music opens and
closes the Grammy winning audio book production of Harry Potter
and the Goblet of Fire as well as all the other Harry Potter audio
books. He is currently composing music for the Magic Tree House
series of children’s audio books.
Other projects include a Hudson River Sloop Singers album featuring
Pete Seeger, and songs by John Forster for Olsen twins videos as
well as Forster’s solo album, Helium on Rounder Records. John
also works regularly with Galt MacDermot (composer of Hair) engineering
his CD’s Thomas Hardy Songs, Portrait of Purdie (w Bernard
Purdie) Joan of Arc and many others including many live recordings.
He mixed Buster Poindexter’s CD Buster’s Spanish Rocketship
on Island Records, Michael Wolff’s Dangerous Vision for Artemis,
and Rudess/Morgenstein Project on Domo Records, and recorded and
mixed Jordan Rudess’ solo CD’s Feed the Wheel and Rhythm
of Time for Magna Carta. Four albums by Red Grammer: Red Grammer’s
Favorite Singalong Songs, Free Fallin’, Hello World, and Soul
Man in a Techno World were all engineered and co-produced by John,
in addition to featuring lots of his guitar playing. He has also
done audio versions of 16 of Marc Brown’s Arthur series books
for Little, Brown & Co. and did additional recording for Tom
Chapin’s last 4 CD’s, including 2005 Grammy nominated
Some Assembly Required which he recorded, mixed and mastered.
Recent projects include a new vocal cd by Michael Wolff and cd’s
by singer-songwriters Sharon Falk, Neal Gomberg, and Patrick Matteson.
